Shopfront Timber Repairs in Hebden Bridge

Project Highlights
Northway carried out specialist timber repairs to a traditional shopfront in Hebden Bridge after wet rot and moisture-related decay were identified in exposed external timber sections.
  • Wet rot affected timber carefully cut back to sound material

  • Replacement sections formed to match the existing shopfront profile

  • Marine-grade plywood and hardwood face sections used for external durability

  • Timber interfaces sealed and detailed ready for the final paint system

Project Overview

Timber shopfronts are especially vulnerable to moisture ingress, particularly around junctions, drip beads, exposed end grain and decorative detailing. In this case, Northway was asked to assess and repair a traditional shopfront on Hebden Bridge High Street after visible timber deterioration had developed.

The aim was to restore the appearance of the frontage, protect the timber from further moisture-related decay and retain the character of the commercial property.

The Issue

The shopfront had developed clear signs of wet rot, including softened timber, peeling paint and visible decay along the upper shopfront sections and pilasters.

These defects were linked to moisture ingress affecting exposed timber details. If left untreated, the decay could have continued to spread, compromising both the appearance and durability of the shopfront.

Works Carried Out

Once the decay boundaries were identified, all affected timber was carefully cut back to sound wood. Replacement sections were then formed to match the existing profile and architectural detailing of the shopfront.

Marine-grade plywood and hardwood face sections were selected for their resistance to moisture and suitability for external joinery.

Works included:

  • Careful removal of wet rot affected timber
  • Cutting back decayed areas to sound material
  • Installation of marine-grade plywood and hardwood replacement sections
  • Matching of existing shopfront profiles and architectural details
  • Sealing of new timber interfaces using epoxy resin primer
  • Use of two-part wood filler where required
  • Stainless steel mechanical fixings to reduce future corrosion risk
  • Exterior-grade adhesive used for durable bonding
  • Exposed edges sealed and prepared for the final paint system

Outcome

The works restored the damaged shopfront sections while retaining the appearance and character of the original frontage.

By using durable external-grade materials, sympathetic replacement sections and careful moisture protection detailing, the repaired shopfront was left in a sound condition and ready for finishing with an appropriate paint system. The project helped preserve the visual quality of the commercial frontage while improving its resistance to future moisture-related deterioration.
