Project Overview

Northway completed remedial damp proofing works at a residential property in Shipley, Bradford.

The works were carried out by Northway technician Steve and focused on an external curved bay window wall affected by elevated external ground levels from an adjacent pavement.

Where external ground levels sit above the internal floor line, lateral penetration of ground moisture can become a significant risk. This can affect both the structural fabric and the internal environment of the property if not managed correctly.

The Issue

The affected wall was located beside an adjacent pavement where the external ground level exceeded the line of the internal floor.

This created a risk of moisture migrating laterally through the wall structure. In this case, the curved geometry of the bay window wall added an additional technical consideration, as the damp proofing system needed to be installed carefully to suit the shape and detailing of the wall.

Works Carried Out

Northway installed a 3mm mesh-faced cavity drain membrane to the affected curved bay wall. This was coupled with a perimeter drainage channel designed to intercept and manage moisture moving laterally through the structure as a result of the elevated pavement levels.

Works included:

  • Assessment of the affected curved bay window wall
  • Identification of elevated external ground levels as a lateral moisture risk
  • Installation of a 3mm mesh-faced cavity drain membrane
  • Installation of a perimeter drainage channel
  • Careful detailing around the curved bay wall geometry
  • Preparation of the wall system to help manage moisture pressure long-term

Outcome

The installed system helps decouple the internal wall fabric from ground moisture pressure, providing a robust and long-term damp proofing solution for the affected area.

By combining a cavity drain membrane with a perimeter drainage channel, the works help manage moisture movement caused by elevated external ground levels while protecting the internal environment and surrounding building fabric.
