Theatre Set Build for Ilkley Charity

From time to time, we take on projects outside our usual building preservation work. In this case, a local charity in Ilkley asked us to help bring their stage production of The Little Mermaid to life by designing and building a custom theatre set. The challenge was to create a large, intricate backdrop that would both look the part on stage and withstand the demands of a live production.

Our team set to work using a combination of plywood sheeting and timber studwork to construct a set spanning over five metres in length. Careful planning and detailing were essential: the design included complex shapes and cut-outs to reflect the undersea theme, with each component built to be both lightweight and durable. Every joint and fixing was considered so the structure could be assembled quickly, safely, and securely on site.

Although this type of work differs from our preservation projects, the principles were much the same; precision joinery, attention to detail, and a focus on durability. By applying the same craftsmanship we bring to timber repairs and structural works, we ensured that the finished set not only looked impressive but also performed reliably during rehearsals and shows.

The completed set provided the perfect stage environment for the charity’s production, combining strength with visual impact. Spanning the full width and height of the stage, it transformed the scene into a convincing underwater world, supporting both the performance and the story. It was a rewarding project to be involved in and a pleasure to support a local charity with something a little out of the ordinary.
