Restoring Victorian Stone Steps in Ilkley

Victorian terraces are a defining feature in Ilkley, with stone steps and boundary walls forming an important part of their character. These steps, usually constructed in local gritstone/sandstone, are built to last but are not immune to structural failure.

At a property in Ilkley, one of the entrance steps had cracked clean through its centre. Closer inspection confirmed that the step was spanning a void beneath, a common feature of stone stair construction. Over time, repeated loading and moisture ingress had weakened the stone, leading to failure. Alongside this, the bedding mortar between adjacent stones had deteriorated, with open joints visible along the coping, and the steel handrail had worked loose and become distorted.

Northway Building Preservation was asked to carry out a sympathetic but robust repair that would restore the entrance both structurally and visually.

The cracked step was dismantled and removed with care, together with the coping stones and handrail sections, to provide full access to the stair assembly. The void beneath the step was cleared and prepared to receive the new tread.

A sandstone replacement was sourced to match the existing orientation, ensuring visual continuity and technical compatibility with the surrounding stonework. The new step was set securely, with all joints repointed using an appropriate mortar. Coping stones were re-fixed in line, and the handrail was straightened, repaired and securely re-bedded in its sockets.

The completed work reinstated the original character of the entrance while providing the stability required for long-term use. By selecting a stone that matched the existing fabric and carefully reinstating the original detailing, the repair remains true to the Victorian terrace style while ensuring durability. With the step, copings and handrail all brought back into sound condition, the property once again benefits from a safe, functional and attractive entrance.
